New Delhi: Tata Motors has expanded its Battery-as-a-Service scheme across its major electric vehicle lineup, bringing down the upfront prices of models including the Harrier EV, Sierra EV, Curvv EV and Nexon EV by several lakh rupees. The BaaS scheme, which was earlier available for the Tiago EV and Punch EV, now covers the wider Tata EV range.

What is Battery-as-a-Service?

Battery-as-a-Service, or BaaS, is a model in which the cost of the electric vehicle and the battery are separated. Normally, when an electric vehicle is purchased, the price of the battery is included in the vehicle's overall purchase price. Under the BaaS model, the battery cost is separated from the initial vehicle price, reducing the amount that customers need to pay upfront.

However, the battery is not provided without cost. Customers have to make a separate payment for battery usage. Under Tata Motors' current BaaS system, this payment is calculated on a per-kilometre basis. The battery-related payment can vary depending on factors including battery capacity, down payment and loan tenure.

The biggest upfront price reduction under the scheme is available on the Harrier EV. The 65 kWh battery version has an original starting price of Rs 21.79 lakh, while its BaaS-based vehicle price comes down to Rs 14.49 lakh. This represents a difference of Rs 7.30 lakh. The battery usage charge for the Harrier EV is Rs 5.9 per kilometre.

For the Sierra EV, the 63 kWh version, which has a regular starting price of Rs 18.79 lakh, is available at Rs 11.99 lakh under BaaS. The difference is Rs 6.80 lakh, with a battery usage charge of Rs 5.5 per kilometre.

The Curvv EV with a 55 kWh battery has a regular starting price of Rs 17.19 lakh. Under BaaS, its starting price comes down to Rs 10.99 lakh, a difference of Rs 6.20 lakh. The battery usage charge is Rs 5 per kilometre.

The Nexon EV with a 45 kWh battery has a regular price of Rs 14.34 lakh, while the BaaS-based price is Rs 8.99 lakh. This represents a difference of Rs 5.35 lakh. The battery usage charge is Rs 4.4 per kilometre.

The Punch EV, which was already available under the BaaS scheme, gets a difference of Rs 3.20 lakh for its 30 kWh battery version. Its regular price of Rs 9.79 lakh comes down to Rs 6.59 lakh under BaaS. The battery usage charge is Rs 2.6 per kilometre.

For the Tiago EV, the 19 kWh version has a regular starting price of Rs 6.99 lakh, while the BaaS-based price starts at Rs 4.69 lakh, representing a difference of Rs 2.30 lakh. The battery usage charge is Rs 2.6 per kilometre.

According to Tata's official information, the BaaS price shown for the Tiago EV is based on daily usage of 44 kilometres, while the calculations for the other models are based on daily usage of 60 kilometres.

Model Regular Starting Price BaaS Starting Price Difference Battery Charge

Tiago EV Rs 6.99 lakh Rs 4.69 lakh Rs 2.30 lakh Rs 2.6/km

Punch EV Rs 9.79 lakh Rs 6.59 lakh Rs 3.20 lakh Rs 2.6/km

Nexon EV Rs 14.34 lakh Rs 8.99 lakh Rs 5.35 lakh Rs 4.4/km

Curvv EV Rs 17.19 lakh Rs 10.99 lakh Rs 6.20 lakh Rs 5/km

Sierra EV Rs 18.79 lakh Rs 11.99 lakh Rs 6.80 lakh Rs 5.5/km

Harrier EV Rs 21.79 lakh Rs 14.49 lakh Rs 7.30 lakh Rs 5.9/km

The prices mentioned are the starting ex-showroom prices for the entry-level variants of the respective models. Since customers opting for BaaS have to make a separate payment for battery usage, the overall cost of ownership needs to be considered by combining the BaaS vehicle price with the battery-related cost.

The key feature of the BaaS scheme is that the battery cost, one of the major cost components of an electric vehicle, is separated from the initial purchase price. This provides customers with an additional financing option through a lower upfront vehicle price, particularly for those who may be hesitant to purchase an EV because of its higher initial cost.
